Gottlieb Daimler met Wilhelm Maybach at the Deutz Gas Engine Works. After a falling out with Deutz, the two moved to Canstatt and developed a series of petrol engines. These single-cylinder engines were adapted to a motorcycle (often considered the world’s first), a motor boat and, finally, a motor car. In 1886, the men mounted one of their engines on a horse-drawn carriage and conducted trials in the late summer. The engine was of 462 cc displacement and protruded through the floorboards, taking up foot-room for the rear seat in the four-passenger carriage. It was not until 1889, however, that Daimler again experimented with an automobile, this time a purpose-built, tubular-frame vehicle with a vee-twin engine.

Daimler’s original prototype has long been lost. There have been several later replicas, one of them built by Daimler Benz in 1986 for centenary observances. The builder of this replica is unknown, but the vehicle corresponds to the original in most respects. Perhaps the most significant deviations are the use of a Panhard twin-cylinder engine, and the seats are of the spindle-back variety. It is nicely presented in gloss black, and a copious use of brass provides a nice contrast. Although the paint is old, the overall patinated look is pleasing. A quality presentation of Gottlieb Daimler’s first automobile, this replica is an excellent candidate for museum display or pride of place in a private collection.
