1940 Ford Deluxe Convertible Coupe

  • Chassis no. 18-5881169
  • Body no. 01A66-2400

Sold for $165,000

MODEL 01A. Est. 140 bhp, 221 cu. in. L-head V-8 engine, three-speed manual transmission, solid front axle and live rear axle with transverse semi-elliptic leaf springs, and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 112"

All early Ford V-8s are treasured by their owners and admired for their beauty. Some models, however, have engendered a wide and perennial following. The favorites among 1940s Fords are surely the 1940 coupes and convertibles. The Dingman Collection’s 1940 Ford Deluxe Convertible Coupe was acquired from Michael Kubarth, of Racine, Wisconsin, and was restored to a very high standard. Immediately following its acquisition, it was shipped directly to Roush Performance Products to be prepared for its participation in the Great American Race, which included having the engine rebuilt to Mr. Dingman’s exacting standards, the remarkable details of which are listed in the front of this catalog, and for which the paperwork on file amounts to approximately $36,000 in additional work. Other special touches include conversion to 12-volt electrics, allowing the use of an electric radiator fan for reliable operation in all climates and the discreet installation of a modern stereo system under the dashboard.

The body is straight with excellent door alignment and operation. Painted Lyon Blue, the exterior sheet metal exhibits a deep shine. The brightwork is all in excellent condition. Trim accessories include bumper tip wings and a front grille guard.

The interior is upholstered in brown leather, complemented with a correct taupe rubber mat in the front and carpet at the rear. As endearing as the 1940 Convertible Coupe’s styling, is the attractive instrument panel. While Standard 1940 Fords have panels painted a single color, the Deluxe cars use subtle toning in Monaida Maroon and Copper Sand Metallic paint. Contrasted by tan plastic trim, the effect is captivating. The dash plastic is in excellent condition, and the instruments have all been restored. Although this car has been superbly outfitted for touring, it retains its period correct appearance throughout. With a flip of the ignition switch and a push of the button, the Roush-rebuilt engine will perform beautifully on any touring event.
