1957 GMC Series 101 1/2-Ton Pickup Truck

  • Chassis no. 1018PT6029

Sold for $68,200

206hp, 347 cu. in. overhead valve V8 engine, Hydramatic automatic transmission, semi-floating rear axle, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 114"

The GMC brand from General Motors Truck and Coach, Pontiac, MI., descended from two trucks, Reliant and Rapid, acquired by the new General Motors Company (later Corporation) in 1908, plus heavy models that traced their origins to Yellow Truck and Coach, acquired by GM beginning in the 1920s. During the twenties, GMC became primarily a medium and heavy-truck producer, the Corporation dictating that the light truck business be largely reserved for Chevrolet.

Yet GMC continued to offer light trucks to provide its dealers with a full line. During the 1930s, it utilized modified Buick, Olds and Pontiac engines for its half-ton models. Many of GM’s medium-price dealers also had a GMC truck franchise under the same roof. From 1939 to 1955, however, GMC offered its own unique overhead-valve six-cylinder engines, plus diesels for the larger models.

In 1953, GMC had pioneered application of Hydramatic automatic transmissions to trucks. But it would be the 1955 model year that would be the watershed for what was then known as T&C. Along with Chevrolet, GMC light trucks offered the first new body since 1947. Styled more like a car than the traditional commercial vehicle, it had Easter-egg colors, extensive bright metal decoration and wrap-around front and rear windows. In addition, when growing popularity of new overhead-valve V8 engines showed a need, the Corporation dictated that GMC use a modified passenger car engine from a GM car division rather than develop its own. Abidingly, GMC turned to Pontiac.

For 1957, GMC light trucks featured a new grille in a carry over of the 1955-56 cab design, as well as a beefed-up optional 347 cubic inch V8 adapted from the base Pontiac engine. The V8 was an extra-cost upgrade from the standard GMC overhead-valve inline six first introduced in 1951.

This sunny, turquoise-colored, fully equipped pickup truck is an exemplary version of light trucks of the time, with its color-keyed white and turquoise interior trim and whitewall tires. It was meticulously restored, and accessorized with dual spotlights and an exterior sunshield. One spiffy, solid truck, it won 1st Place from AACA at Hershey in 1997. Since then, it appears to have been perfectly maintained.

This truck is equipped with wide whitewall tires mounted on color keyed road wheels. It features an automatic transmission with the desirable V8 engine, both of which were optional. The truck is equipped with dual spotlights, an outside mounted sun visor, a radio, heater and a dash mounted traffic viewer.

The subject of a major concours quality restoration, this is one spiffy, solid truck. It won 1st Place from AACA at Hershey in 1997 and having been remarkably well preserved, would continue to do admirably well at show today.
