1935 Ford Station Wagon

Under Edsel Ford’s direction, the 1935 Fords were restyled by designer Phil Wright, then working at Briggs Manufacturing Company, which was supplying many Ford bodies. A veteran of the Walter M. Murphy Company, Wright’s prior credits also included the 1933 Pierce Silver Arrow, and he would go on to work at Packard. The public found the new Ford attractive, so much so that it handily outsold Chevrolet.

The front doors reverted to hinges at the A pillar, and the overall look was cleaner, in part because cowl lamps were eliminated, their function incorporated into the headlamps. Although the wheelbase remained the same, the engine was moved forward eight inches. This allowed more passenger room inside, and placement of the rear seat ahead of the axle, rather than over it. The ride was improved with longer, more flexible transverse leaf springs, relocated outside the wheelbase, not directly over the axles. Ford called the concept “Center Poise Ride.”

The station wagon body was also redesigned. The “eggcrate” look of earlier woodies was replaced with narrower horizontal panels, five to a door. The spare tire was moved from the fender to the tailgate, and a heavy compensating spring added to allow easier raising and lowering of the gate. For the first time in a Ford station wagon, the front doors had roll-up windows. Wagon production soared, topping 4,500.

A fine example of the new body design, this Model 48 woodie has original wood, refinished with just the slightest staining at the joints. The doors all shut well with even gaps, and body contours of the sheet metal are good and true. The Vineyard Green paint exhibits a deep shine. The brightwork is generally good, with some scratches, and the running board rubber has been dressed to extend its life. This car has the new roll-down door windows, with sliding canvas side curtains in the rear. The tailgate curtain snaps in place. The safety glass windshield shows slight separation at the edges. Twin outside accessory mirrors are installed on the front door hinges.

The seats have been newly upholstered in brown artificial leather, the front furnished with lap belts for two. Floor mats are tan rubber, the rear being new but the front an older item showing some stains. The dashboard is painted in authentic taupe, and the original instruments are nicely detailed. The steering wheel shows some wear.

The engine compartment is clean but not excessively detailed. The engine shows moderate signs of use, with some staining to the aluminum intake manifold, and the cylinder heads are cast iron, painted Ford green. The chassis and underbody are painted black, but there are some scratches that have led to surface rust.

The car has Firestone 6.00-16 blackwall tires on cream spoked wheels; the tires were new in 2000. The tailgate-mounted spare is fitted with a steel cover in body color.

George Quinn, a postmaster in Hydeville, Vermont bought this car new and sold it in 1960 with just over 40,000 original miles to Dale Stikeman, then 18 years old, of Salem, New Hampshire. It took Dave 14 years to save up enough money to begin a thorough restoration that lasted three years. Nick purchased the two-owner, low-mileage wagon in 1999 before freshening the varnish and adding the Columbia rear end.

As presented, the car is registered in California with year-of-manufacture plates 8R272. The plates go with the car. The odometer reads 43,671, and the body number dates from October 1935. Like all cars in the Alexander collection it runs well and is driven regularly. A presentable and comfortable car, it is fitted with a Columbia two-speed rear axle, allowing effortless cruising on freeway and secondary roads alike.
