Lot 116

1946 Mercury Station Wagon

  • Chassis no. 1287979

Sold for $140,250

Model 69M. 100 bhp, 239.4 cu. in. Flathead V8 engine, three-speed manual transmission with Columbia rear axle, solid front axle and live rear axle with transverse semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 118"

Although Ford was the first U.S. make to resume production after World War II, the same did not hold true for siblings Mercury and Lincoln. The Lincoln lines restarted in September 1945, with gala introduction in January, but it was October 22nd before the first Mercury came off the line and its formal debut didn’t occur until February 8, 1946. By that time, all of GM, plus Chrysler Corporation and independents Hudson, Nash, Packard and Studebaker were well into their 1946 model year.

Based substantially on the short-lived 1942 model, the new Mercury adopted a much bolder grille, with eight fine-tooth vertical “combs” flanking a vertical divider, four to a side. The twin-horizontal fender trim of the prewar cars continued, but the lower of the two strips was now much bolder. The hood ornament, too, was revised, as were the hub caps.

This Mercury station wagon is a late 1946 model, built in October. Nicely restored in Light Moonstone Gray, it is a 48,000-mile car and easily turns heads. The metal contours are excellent, and the paint has a deep shine. The wood body has excellent alignment and the doors shut superbly. The original Maple wood exhibits the deep honey-colored glow only achieved with 10 coats or more of the best marine varnish. The roof covering is new brown artificial leather.

The brightwork is all excellent, though the original running board rubber shows minor wear and the glass, all original with Ford script, has only some slight separation on the left vent window.

The seats are upholstered in correct red leather. There are lap belts for two in front and the floor mats are new black rubber, front and rear. The dashboard is original mahogany woodgrain, remains in excellent condition, and the steering wheel has been nicely restored. The car is equipped with factory original AM radio, heater and an electric clock.

The engine compartment is correctly detailed, but not overdone. The engine is properly painted blue and the chassis and underbody are painted black and appropriately detailed. The car runs on Firestone 7.10-15 blackwall tires, new in 2001, and the spare is mounted to the tailgate under a metal cover.

Purchased by Nick Alexander in July 2000, this particular woodie received a Dearborn Award from the Early Ford V8 Club at Pismo Beach, California in 2001, with a score of 995 points. It runs and drives well, and its Columbia two-speed axle, four-inch Mercury crankshaft and later Mercury cam make it a superb long-distance tour car with no outward evidence of the enhanced horsepower. It is registered with California year-of-manufacture plates 80H134, which accompany it in the sale. Attractive and ready to travel, it will be the ideal conveyance for the aficionado of fine woodwork.
