Lot 145

1948 Ford Super Deluxe Station Wagon

  • Chassis no. 899A2278430

Sold for $137,500

Model 89A. 100 bhp, 239.4 cu. in. Flathead V8 engine, three-speed manual transmission with Columbia rear axle, solid front axle and live rear axle with transverse semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 114"

Ford’s 1948 model year began and ended early. Work was feverishly progressing on the all-new models designed by George Walker. Thus the older cars were continued almost without change. Cars were given a new model number, 89A, and serial number prefix beginning in October 1947. The only other significant change was to the ignition switch.

Station wagon production halted at Iron Mountain in March 1948. The facility was slated to build the new hybrid steel-wood bodies for 1949 Fords and Mercurys, and the Mercury came on line first, in April. Thus total Ford wagon volume for the 1948 model year was much reduced, just 8,912, barely half that of 1947 in a season half as long. The era of the all-wood wagon had ended, but a new one was beginning. Production of the new type bodies at Iron Mountain would soar, the output for 1949 more than doubling the previous record.

This Super Deluxe station wagon spent its early life in upstate New York. One of the last station wagons built in February 1948, it retains many of its original features. Newly painted in Barcelona Blue, it is very attractive and exhibits a deep shine. The body contours are excellent. The wood has been nicely restored, and has slight discoloration only at the joints. The varnish is excellent, the doors shut well and have even gaps. The roof is original black artificial leather, and shows only a few cracks. In fact, the script glass looks all original as well.

The brown artificial leather seats are original and show moderate wear. The black rubber floor mats look new. The dashboard has very good original maple woodgrain with instruments that are in very good condition. The car has a radio, heater and working electric clock.

The engine is clean, in correct Ford blue, but is not over-detailed. The air cleaner and oil filter look newly-painted and the chassis and underbody are painted black. The car has recently been fitted with a new muffler and the tires are Goodyear 6.50-16 blackwalls, installed in 2002. The spare is mounted on the tailgate under a metal cover.

This car was owned in the 1960s by Charles and Erma Haselton, of Wilmington, New York. Until 1988, it belonged to William VanAllen, Jr., of Summit, New Jersey. It moved west to California in the 1990s and was purchased by Mr. Alexander in March 2002. It earned a Rouge award for preservation from the Early Ford V8 Club at Keystone, Colorado, in 2005.

Registered in California with year-of-manufacture plates 39B6838, which go with the car, it runs and drives very well. The Columbia rear axle is especially suited to touring, and the eight-passenger wagon body provides vast luggage space.
