Lot 110

1957 Ford Country Squire

  • Chassis no. C7FY249240

Sold for $49,500

212 bhp, 292 cu. in. ohv V8 engine, three-speed manual transmission with overdrive, coil spring independent front suspension, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 116"

After 1951, only one Ford station wagon, the Country Squire, bore any wood trim, and from mid-1952 even that was entirely of artificial composition. Its image, however, was undiminished, and such was the appeal of the Country Squire that soon other manufacturers, who had once raced to abandon wood, were fielding their own imitations.

Until its farewell season in 1991, however, the Country Squire remained the station wagon to own.

This car was purchased new by an older woman, and, unusually for any top-of-the-line model, it was delivered with no power assists and few accessories. The radio is the inexpensive five-button AM model, and the car has a heater and electric clock.

The body is all but unmarred, with just a small ding in the right front fender. The doors have even gaps and shut well. The original black paint is very good overall, with only a few blemishes and some chips. The woodgrain paneling is in good condition, although its surrounding fiberglass accent is showing wear. The glass is all in very good condition.

Passenger seats for nine are upholstered in red and white bolster-style vinyl, all very good except for slight wear at the stitches in the driver’s cushion. Front lap belts for two are provided. The black rubber floor mats look new. The load deck, in red linoleum, shows slight scuff wear and the red weave headliner is very good. The unpadded dashboard, painted red and white, is similarly good, but the steering wheel shows slight wear.

The chassis is unrestored, but retains its original black paint and the engine, in original red paint, is fairly clean but not detailed. The car is fitted with B.F. Goodrich 8.00-14 blackwall tires installed in 2005; a Firestone spare is carried under the load deck. Like all cars in the collection, it runs well, showing just 20,592 miles. It was purchased by Mr. Alexander in November 2004. The car is currently registered in California, and carries year-of-manufacture plates TCG-612. They go with the car.

A superb original example of an uncommonly-equipped 1957 Country Squire, this car needs nothing to be driven and enjoyed. The preservation classes in various clubs are the fastest-growing segment of the hobby. This Country Squire is ideal for competition in this venue.
