400 bhp, 427 cu. in. “L68” V-8 engine with triple carburetors, three-speed automatic transmission, front and rear independent suspension, and four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes. Wheelbase: 98 in.

  • One of 1,932 examples equipped with the 400-horsepower “L68” engine; Perfectly optioned for highway cruising

Nineteen sixty-eight was a big year for the Corvette. This was the first year of the third-generation body style, as Chevrolet completely redesigned the car’s bodywork and interior, yet they still kept the widely adored chassis and available engines largely the same as the outgoing “C2” Stingray. Additionally, the Corvette offered a host of options so buyers could configure their car exactly to their tastes. Eleven engine options were combined with ten exterior and seven interior colors to ensure that almost no two Corvettes produced that year were alike.

This car was restored in the northeast in the early 2000s, and it was then acquired by Mr. Pack in 2008. It is a matching-numbers example that is equipped with the rare and desirable 400-horsepower, 427-cubic inch “L68” engine, which is topped with three 2-barrel carburetors and mated to a three-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. As such, this Corvette is perfectly suited for highway cruising. The car is finished in its correct shade of Safari Yellow, according it its trim tag, and features numerous factory options, including power steering, power brakes, power windows, a posi-traction rear axle, an AM/FM radio, tinted glass, Rallye wheels, redline tires, and factory air conditioning.

Of the third-generation Corvettes, the early big block cars are the most desirable, as they avoided the ever increasing emissions standards that would restrict power on later examples. This wonderfully preserved and maintained L68 Corvette would be an excellent highway cruiser, as it is suited for overall comfort yet powered by an engine that is capable of putting most modern cars safely in the rearview mirror.
