1967 Jaguar Series I E-Type Roadster

300bhp 4,235 cc double overhead camshaft 4.2 liter six-cylinder, four-speed manual transmission, four-wheel independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. Wheelbase: 105"

The new E-type was, if anything, an even greater technical breakthrough than the XK. Dispensing entirely with the prewar concept of a separate body bolted to a rolling chassis, the E-Type broke new ground with a monocoque body tub attached to a complex tubular framework holding the engine and bonnet. The new car’s performance was as breathtaking as its looks, with the magic 150mph barrier finally broken by a standard production sports car.

However, a radically new concept always leaves room for improvement, and as the motoring public and journalists became accustomed to the 3.8 it was inevitable that demand would lead to the evolution of an upgraded new model. Jaguar was highly sensitive to the importance of the E-Type and, after producing some 15,000 3.8s, they released the sophisticated 4.2 version of the Series I at the end of 1964.

To many, this car was everything the E-Type should have been to start with. Gone was the antediluvian prewar Moss gearbox now replaced with a modern, quiet and efficient all-synchromesh unit. Engine performance was increased, with the greater torque from the 4.2 liters giving improved acceleration, smoothness and gas consumption.

The Series I 4.2 Liter Roadster presented here is 78,000 mile example, which is correct from new, that has been well maintained by its current enthusiast owner. Originally painted blue, the Jaguar was refinished in red with a black leather interior and it shows very nicely while displaying signs of an older restoration and some road use. The current owner related that he had actually owned the car for several years in the 1970s and then purchased the E-Type back in the early 1980s.

The interior and engine bay both appear tidy, while the underbody displays evidence of road use. As the vendor wanted a reliable driver, he opted to increase the radiator size to better handle and overcome the E-Type’s common cooling problem and accordingly, the Jaguar does not overheat and is a stress-free driver regardless of the traffic conditions. Fitted with

a Blaupunkt AM/FM radio this open roof grand British tourer is a great weekend car for the

motoring enthusiast.
