Lot 055

1966 Jaguar Series I E-Type Roadster

Sold for $70,400

265hp, 4.2 liter inline six-cylinder double overhead cam engine with SU carburetors, synchromesh four-speed manual gearbox, four-wheel independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. Wheelbase: 96"

The new E-type was, if anything, an even greater technical breakthrough than the XK. Dispensing entirely with the prewar concept of a separate body bolted to a rolling chassis, the E-Type broke new ground with a monocoque body tub attached to a complex tubular framework holding the engine and bonnet. The new car’s performance was as breathtaking as its looks, with the magic 150mph barrier finally broken by a standard production sports

car. However, a radically new concept always leaves room for improvement, and as the motoring public and journalists became accustomed to the 3.8 it was inevitable that demand would lead to the evolution of an upgraded new model. Jaguar was highly

sensitive to the importance of the E-Type and, after producing some 15,000 3.8s, they released the sophisticated 4.2 version of the Series I at the end of 1964.

Presented here, in one of the prettiest colors to grace the flowing lines of the classic E-Type, is a fully restored example finished in Opalescent blue with a black leather interior. With less than 1,800 miles since the restoration’s completion it is also in near

perfect condition. Additionally, we understand that the car was in exceptionally complete and well-preserved condition prior to the comprehensive no-expense-spared restoration was begun.

Restoration work carried out on the car included new chrome bumpers, a new radiator, new floors, fully restored gas tank, weather stripping, seals and gaskets, trunk equipment, dash top, carpets, door panels, all new upholstery, clutch cylinder, master cylinder, hoses, pipes, exhaust, red line tires, ball joints and an all new brake system topped of with a concours quality repaint. The vendor reports that the Jaguar is even complete with a useful and nicely installed AIWA in dash AM/FM cassette deck and stereo. Overall this is an excellent example of a recent restoration on a quality driver car that will allow its next owner the option of daily fair weather driving, long distance touring or weekend admiration in the garage.
