RM Sotheby’s kicks off its 2016 European calendar in spectacular fashion with a return to Paris, 3 February, for its third annual sale during the world-famous Retromobile week. The evening auction is held at the historic Place Vauban in the city’s center, whose stunning grounds offer the perfect setting to present a carefully curated selection of 61 of the finest motor cars from both pre- and post-war periods. From top-tier sports, racing and touring cars to affordable entry-level collectibles, the catalogue spans 108 years of automotive history with nine lots estimated to fetch more than €1 million each.

For those unable to attend the sale in person, RM Sotheby’s offers a range of remote bidding options, including absentee, Internet, and telephone bidding, and the auction will stream live at providing real-time coverage of the event. The auction is held immediately after the Festival Automobile International, which features a stunning display of beautiful concept cars and pays tribute to car designers from around the world.

Lot 152 – 1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica LWB Coupé Aerodinamico by Pininfarina, chassis no. 3931 SA (Est. €3.000.000 - €3.300.000)

The first of just 18 Series II long-wheelbase examples constructed, 3931 SA was completed on September 29, 1962, and quickly taken to London where it was unveiled at the Earls Court Motor Show. It was then exported to the United States and shown at the 1962 Chicago Motor Show. An important example of Ferrari’s grandest GT automobile, the Superamerica features the desirable covered headlamps. It was fully restored in the early 1980s and is presented in its original color combination of Grigio Argento with a Nero interior.

Lot 143 – 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder by Wendler, chassis no. 550-0068 (Est. €2.200.000 - €2.600.000)

The 550 Spyder put Porsche firmly on the map as a serious racing competitor, earning the nickname ‘Giant Killer’ for its ability to defeat much more powerful rivals. The example on offer was originally shown on Porsche’s stand at the 1955 Frankfurt Motor Show and later competed in a number of prestigious US-based race meetings, including the 1956 Sebring 12 Hours. Purchased by the current owner in 1999, it has been meticulously maintained and is highly eligible for many of the world’s leading vintage events.

Quenching the ever-increasing thirst for later-model, high-performance poster cars, RM’s Paris sale presents a trio of Ferrari supercars:

  • Lot 141 – a low-mileage 1989 Ferrari F40, delivered new to Stefano Casiraghi, the second husband of Princess Caroline of Monaco and offered from 26 years of single ownership (Est. €1.000.000 - €1.200.000);
  • Lot 145 – a matching-numbers 1997 Ferrari F50, the supercar that gave Ferrari’s most loyal customers the same levels of performance and exhilaration previously reserved for F1 drivers (Est. €1.300.000 - €1.500.000); and,
  • Lot 138 – a Classiche-certified 2004 Ferrari Enzo, fitted with numerous luxurious custom features including satellite navigation, a Bose stereo, and carbon fiber rear spoiler (Est. €1.500.000 - €2.000.000).

Some of the most legendary automobiles from the 1950s and 60s top the list of entries for the Place Vauban sale:

  • Lot 150 – a fabulous example of BMW’s halo car, a 1957 BMW 507 Roadster Series II, complete with original Rudge wheels, hardtop, books, and toolbox (Est. €1.900.000 - €2.200.000);
  • Lot 148 –  a freshly restored 1951 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS Villa d’Este Coupé by Touring, one of the most elegant coachbuilt sports cars of the immediate post-war era (Est. €750.000 - €900.000); and,
  • Lot 144 – the favored car of international spies for over 60 years, a 1963 Aston Martin DB5, the very first production, factory left-hand-drive DB5 saloon built (Est. €1.100.000 - €1.300.000).

RM’s Paris event includes a number of ‘on-the-rise’ Italian GT cars offering incredible value for collectors:

  • the Ferrari BB, including the 1974 Ferrari 365 GT4 BB (Est. €400.000 - €500.000) and 1977 Ferrari 512 BB (Est. €400.000 - €450.000), provides performance equal to the 365 GTB/4 Daytona at a much lower price point;
  • a pair of Maserati GT cars offering a driving experience comparable to their better known competitors: the 1969 Maserati Ghibli 4.7 Coupé, a wonderfully affordable alternative to the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona (Est. €210.000 - €250.000); and the 1965 Maserati Mistral 3.7 Coupé, equipped with a twin-plug, twin-cam six-cylinder engine similar to that of the Aston Martin DB4, at nearly half the price (Est. €220.000 - €250.000).
