Vintage Motor Cars at Amelia Island

Special Historical and Memorabilia Auction to Kick-off Sale Headlined by a Ferrari 312 PB Group 5 Sports Prototype and Rare ’55 Mercedes Alloy Gullwing – March 13, 2004

BLENHEIM, Ontario, Canada (January 27, 2004) – RM Auctions will host an important sale of nearly 100 of the world’s most sought-after collector cars when the gavel falls at the Vintage Motor Cars at Amelia Island on March 13, 2004. Influential collectors and hobbyists will have a unique opportunity to acquire amazing vehicles that rarely come on the market, including a magnificent 1972 Ferrari 312 PB race car and a special alloy-bodied Mercedes Gullwing.

“There is no doubt that we’ve amassed a veritable feast of fine autos for this single-day sale,” says Rob Myers of RM Auctions. “The Ferrari 312 PB is an FIA Group 5 Prototype Sports Racer, driven in competition by Brian Redman and featured in Road & Track Magazine. We expect it just might surpass its pre-auction estimate of $1,650,000 to $2,000,000 because it’s such a sterling example, with great provenance, and would be the centerpiece of any Ferrari collection.”

Another vehicle expected to equal or surpass pre-auction estimates is a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Competition Alloy Gullwing Coupe. The first of 29 aluminum-bodied examples built for sports car club competition, this car, originally owned by well-known American industrialist Carl Kiekhaefer (founder of Mercury Marine). It is expected to bring between $800,000 and $1,000,000.

Other notable vehicles include:
  • A 1937 Mercedes 540K Cabriolet A – a dynamic beauty finished in two-tone black and silver. This example is beautifully presented and is in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition. (Est. $800,000 - $950,000)
  • A 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 Alloy – one of only 10 constructed with the special alloy body, this one is said to be the most original remaining example showing less than 7,500 miles from new. (Est. $650,000 - $850,000)
  • A 1931 Chrysler CG Imperial Roadster – a pristine example of the richness and opulence indicative of the golden era of luxury automobiles, this example has undergone a full concours restoration and has a solid provenance. (Est. $275,000 - $350,000)
  • A 1938 Packard Model 1608 V12 Convertible Sedan – a multiple AACA and CCCA award winner, this concours-quality Packard sports the division window, triple lights, dual sidemounts, trunk rack and a rare back seat radio. An extensive body-off restoration was completed in 1996 and it remains in stunning overall condition. This vehicle originally sold by the legendary Earl C. Anthony.

In addition, the auction will feature a special segment of historic and nostalgic memorabilia, which will be auctioned at 11:00 a.m. on March 14th just prior to the start of the automotive auction. A major highlight of the memorabilia auction is a series of 17 lots of original illustrations and published Playboy magazine art, by an assortment of noted Playboy artists, including John Dempsey, Bill Benway and Alberto Vargas.

Other distinctive and unique memorabilia items include:
  • An American Graffiti Cast Contract Set – an awesome set of contracts awarding the then-novice actors Richard Dreyfus, Harrison Ford, Ron Howard, Mackenzie Phillips, Paul LeMat, Bo Hopkins, Robert Smith and Charles Martin Smith small percentages of the movie’s profits. The piece comes with a copy of the movie poster (Est. $4,000 - $5,000)
  • A Walt Disney Signed Document – authorizing the formation of WED Enterprises, marking the official beginning of the Disney amusement parks (Est. $12,000 - $15,000)
  • John Lennon/Paul McCartney Signed Document – from their music company Maclen Music Limited, along with the signature of Beatles’ business partner Neil Aspinall, matted with a 45 rpm record sleeve from the late 1960s (Est. $12,000 - $15,000)

Rasmussen and signed by the artist plus nine of America’s astronauts including Alan Shepard, Gene Cernan, Jim Lovell, Wally Schirra, Pete Conrad, John Glenn, Jack Lousma, Rick Hauck, and Neil Armstrong (Est. $3,000 - $4,000)
  • Harry Houdini Signed Letter – a letter typed on the magician’s personal letterhead and dated February 26, 1926, shortly before his death (Est. $4,000 - $5,000)
