Toronto International Spring Classic Car Auction

RM Classic Cars To Feature 400-500 Classic, Sports and Muscle Cars At Canada’s Largest Collector Car Auction at the International Center, Mississauga, Ontario – April 2, 3 & 4, 2004

BLENHEIM, Ontario, Canada (March 3, 2004) – RM Classic Cars’ Toronto International Spring Classic Car Auction, sponsored by the Ontario Ford Dealer’s Association, returns to the Toronto International Center, April 2-4, 2004 with an outstanding collection of automotive history to bid on. From an early Ford Model T Speedster, to the exotic Ferrari Testarossa supercar, RM has assembled an impressive lineup of historically significant sports, classic and muscle cars.

“This event is important to Toronto because it draws thousands of car enthusiasts from across North America and overseas who come for the cars, but also stay for the weekend. It has a positive economic factor on tourism in Toronto,” says Dan Spendick of RM Classic Cars. “We’ve got cars from nearly every decade and there’s no other event in the country that has this kind of variety and quality,” adds Rob Myers, founder of RM. “It’s really a showcase of automobile history, and the best part is, you can take one home.”

Some of the historical auction highlights include:
  • 1911 Ford Model T Brass Speedster - Refinished in two-tone gray this ’11 Ford is very nicely restored from the column-mounted driver’s windscreen right down to the pin-striped wheels. The car runs like a “T”. The rad shell, headlights, coach lights, horn, windscreen frame, steering wheel hub & spokes, gas cap & tank straps, grease caps and tail light housings are all in sparkling highly polished brass. (Estimate $25,000 – $30,000)
  • 1969 Stutz Blackhawk Prototype - This is the original 1969 Stutz Blackhawk prototype # 276579P147588 (20,000 original miles) designed by Virgil Exner and completely hand built by Ghia in Turin, Italy at a cost of over $300,000.00 U.S. that year. Elvis, Sinatra, Peter Lawford, Sammy Davis, Dick Martin and Lucille Ball all wanted to be the first to buy this car, but it remained in the private hands of James O'Donnell, founder of the reborn Stutz company, until his death in 1997. This prototype car up for auction was test driven by all the celebrity stars that eventually bought a Stutz. The very next car built, the first production model, was purchased by Elvis Presley and displayed in Graceland, and is the only one identical to the prototype car. Sinatra wanted the first car off the line for himself, but Stutz was convinced to sell it to Elvis, and as a result, Sinatra vowed never to purchase one, however he did drive the prototype as well.

A true museum piece it comes with original documentation including first cheque to purchase the first chassis, a cheque to advance the company funds to start up, and stock prospectus, original brochures and celebrity photos. This rare example going on the auction block features a “balanced and blue printed” 428 cubic inch V8, and the original Connelly leather interior which has not been changed because of the historical importance of its celebrity drivers. Interestingly, the car retains its 35 year old 17 by 3 1/2 inch Firestone rims and tires, another testament to its originality. (Estimate $100,000 – $150,000)

1986 Ferrari Testarossa - Named the Testarossa after it's famous racing heritage, this supercar was specifically designed for the North American market offering a larger, comfortable cockpit area. It offers a 12-cylinder boxer engine and the optional Ansa Exhaust system that boosts performance to 415 hp, and creating a blinding top speed of 190 mph. The exterior is the original Rosso Corsa Red paint with an immaculate black Connelly leather interior package. The car has been under careful ownership since new and has a mere 33,000 kilometers (20,000 miles). It has had the major 30,000 kilometer service done including the timing belts (a $10,000 service!) The car has new tires, new stereo system, knock-off wheels, cold A/C, and full working amenities. All service and records are up to date and the car looks and drives like new. Here is an opportunity to own a legend, as it will be sold to the highest bidder at “NO RESERVE”! (Estimate $90,000 – $100,000)

During the auction weekend, RM will also host a three-day indoor swap meet featuring automotive parts and accessories, literature and collectibles. In addition, a huge assortment of automobilia, including signs, toys, memorabilia, pop machines and antique gas pumps, will be offered for auction.

With approximately 400-500 cars crossing the block all weekend long, RM’s Toronto International Spring Classic Car Auction kicks off with a vehicle preview Friday, April 2nd at 12:00 noon, followed by the auction beginning at approximately 3:00 pm. Doors open at 9:00 am on Saturday and Sunday, with auction action starting at 10:00 am each day, and ending at 9:00 pm Saturday and 6:00 pm on Sunday.
