WORLD CHAMPION RACING LEGEND PHIL HILL TO SPEAK AT CANADA’S CLASSIC CAR CAPITOL CELEBRATION

RMs Silver Anniversary Event

America’s First Formula 1 World Champion and Winner of Le Mans, Sebring, Daytona and Others to Share Racing Career Highlights at RM Classic Cars’ 25th Anniversary Celebration Chatham, Ontario – July 16, 17 & 18th, 2004

BLENHEIM, Ontario, Canada (May 3, 2004) – World Champion, and Miami born, Philip Toll Hill Jr. took his first drive in a family friend's brand new 1936 Oldsmobile. The young Hill was sitting in the car pretending to drive – moving the steering wheel, pressing the pedals and shifting. When the car owner asked the boy if he could drive, the future racing great replied with a confident, "Sure!" To the horror of the other party guests, the Olds owner got into the passenger seat and let Hill drive the car around the block. Phil Hill was all of nine.

"That started my ultra-interest in cars," said Hill. At other times he's described his association with all things automotive as an "obsession". Hill's coming of age coincided with the rise of southern Californian sports car racing. As a teenager, Hill became one of the first dozen members of the California Sportscar Club in 1946 and his first taste of victory came in a rally through the wilds of the San Fernando Valley at the age of 19.

By 1961, Hill became the first American to win the Formula One World Drivers Championship, the ultimate competition in all of motorsports. For 17 years his record was unchallenged and today is shared with only one other American, Mario Andretti. Hill remains the only American born Formula One champion.

Hill won countless other races over a career period spanning two decades. Other highlights in his illustrious career include winning the grueling 24 Hours of Le Mans three times (before the Mulsanne chicane and with only two drivers sharing the car, not the three of today), the 12 hours of Sebring three times, the Argentine 1000 Km three times, the Grand Prix of Italy twice and the Belgian Grand Prix. He has the distinction of having won the first and last races of his driving career, the final victory being the BOAC 500 at Brands Hatch in England in 1967. In a time of little or no safety equipment and when driver deaths in competition where commonplace, Hill remarkably was never seriously injured in a racing car.

Once an obsession, then a hobby, then a business, cars have a singular place in Hill's life. Once a partner in the world-renowned Hill & Vaughn restoration business, Hill now devotes his attention to his own collection of over a dozen antique automobiles. The crown jewel of the collection is a 1917 Pierce-Arrow, which has been in his family since new and has garnered prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance honors. Another great interest in his life has been his collection of antique automatic musical instruments.

Hill has worked as a television commentator for ABC's Wide World of Sports and continues as a contributing editor for Road & Track magazine, writing retrospective articles and conducting the tests for the hugely popular "World's Fastest Cars" feature.

“We are very fortunate to have Phil as our special guest for the anniversary event,” says Rob Myers, founder of RM. “He’s won all the world’s most famous races and driven some of the most legendary racing cars – an unparalleled career.” “One of the most inspiring and passionate individuals you’ll ever meet,” adds Myers. “Phil’s accomplishments off the track, with his restoration business Hill & Vaughn, became an inspiration for me and my company and I am grateful for that experience,” beams Myers.

Those visits had a profound effect on the RM organization, which is evident in the quality and craftsmanship of the work performed at RM today. “Rob Myers had visited my shop several times in his early years, and since then I’ve watched RM’s progress and really admired what him and his company have accomplished and the results of their efforts,” says Hill.

The RM 25th Anniversary celebration is unique as it will also reunite a legendary car and driver. The champion Phil Hill will once again be at the helm of the legendary Ferrari 330 TRI/LM which Phil drove to victory at Le Mans in 1962. "Although the 330 was something of a brute in concept, it was not a brutish car to drive. It was also a damn fast car and with it, I was able to break Mike Hawthorn's Le Mans lap record” Hill said when asked about this famous car, which will be on rare display at the event from a private collection. It will truly be a historical event for both Phil Hill, Rob Myers and the many enthusiasts, fans and guests of the 25th anniversary celebration.

The anniversary celebration, held in RM’s hometown community of Chatham-Kent, Ontario, Canada is expected to draw thousands of automobile enthusiasts from across North America. The event will feature one of the country’s largest classic car shows, a Concours d’Elegance, art and fashion shows, celebrity events, vintage car seminars and live entertainment.
