RM AUCTIONS’ MONTEREY SALE INCLUDES MOST IMPORTANT OFFERING OF SHELBY AUTOMOBILES IN THE WORLD

The Monterey Sports and Classic Car Auction

10 Significant Shelbys and Cobras Up for Bid as Well as a Personally Signed Catalog Cover By Carroll Shelby with Proceeds Donated to Charity– Saturday, August 14th

BLENHEIM, Ontario, Canada (July 7, 2004) – RM Auctions’ 19th Annual Monterey Sports and Classic Car Auction, held at the Portola Plaza Hotel in Monterey on August 13-14, 2004 will feature the most significant offering of Shelby and Cobra cars ever made available at auction. Ten unparalleled Shelby Mustang and Cobra vehicles will cross the auction block in succession on Saturday evening as legendary builder and racer Carroll Shelby looks on from the podium.

Immediately following the sale of these ten historic Shelby automobiles, RM Auctions will hold a special charity auction featuring a poster size RM Monterey Sports and Classic Car Auction catalog cover which will be personally signed by Shelby to the winner bidder. RM Auctions will match the hammer price of the specially autographed catalog cover and proceeds from its sale will benefit the Carroll Shelby Children’s Foundation – an organization dedicated to providing financial assistance to children around the world in need of acute coronary and kidney care.

Kicking off the Shelby parade will be the first Shelby-AC Cars partnered vehicle and the first FIA Cobra produced since 1967 – a 2004 Shelby 289 Cobra 7000 Series (Serial #CSX7501). Finished in a distinctive Viking Blue, this landmark continuation 289 Cobra sports a traditional aluminum body, handcrafted in the U.K. and is powered by a Ford 289 high-performance engine with 9.8:1 compression and ported aluminum heads. The Shelby is currently titled in Carroll Shelby’s name and it is offered to collectors at No Reserve. Its pre-sale estimate is $150,000 to $200,000.

RM Auctions’ will also offer one of the most important of all the Cobras built, a 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra Competition car, which was built nearly 40 years ago to go head-to-head with the lightweight Corvette Grand Sports of its day. Designed and constructed to be a powerhouse engine with wheels, the 427 Comp car is a stripped down rocket, with thinner than usual aluminum skin and mountains of horsepower. It represents one of the finest examples of its kind and is offered for sale publicly for the first time in many years. (Estimate: $600,000 to $700,000)

Another stellar example of Carroll Shelby’s craftsmanship includes a 1967 Shelby GT500 Fastback in time warp original condition retaining all of its original components, paint and interior. (Est. $130,000 – 160,000).

The most unique of the ten cars offered is without question the 1966 Ford 427 Cobra Dragonsnake. It is the only 427 Dragonsnake ever built by the factory and is also the most expensive Cobra ever sold new with a price tag in excess of $11,000 new. Notably, this car is complete with its factory hardtop and still, to this day, retains two National Drag Records. (Est: $400,000 to $600,000).

Other prime Shelby vehicles offered for sale at Monterey include:
  • Lot# 257 - 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra (Est: $350,000 to $425,000)
  • Lot# 254 - 1967 Shelby 427 Cobra (Est: $300,000 to $400,000)
  • Lot# 258 - 1965 Shelby 289 Cobra Daytona Coupe (Est: $300,000 to $350,000)
  • Lot# 253 - 1963 Shelby 289 Cobra (Est: $200,000 to $250,000)
  • Lot# 251 - 1965 Shelby 427 Cobra 4000 Series (Est: $ 90,000 to $120,000)
  • Lot# 259 - 1967 Shelby GT500 Fastback (Est: $ 80,000 to $100,000)

“This is a remarkable assemblage of cars that expertly represent the history and heritage of Carroll Shelby – from his original racing and street Cobras, through the Shelby Mustangs to the continuation cars he’s manufacturing for a new generation of collectors and enthusiasts,” says Rob Myers, founder of RM Auctions. “Many great cars have crossed our Monterey auction block in previous years, but no one has ever brought together such a dynamic cross-section of one man’s automotive accomplishments as this.”

The event will also feature several million dollar vehicles including an extremely rare 1953 Ferrari 166/250 MM Competition Spyder and a 1961 Chaparral 1 Sports Racing Car among dozens of exotic and sports cars.

RM Auction’s Monterey Sports and Classic Car Auction will be held at the Portola Plaza Hotel (formerly the Doubletree Hotel) at Fisherman’s Wharf, 2 Portola Place, Monterey, California, Sale Preview begins on Thursday, August 12 and Friday, August 13 from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., followed by auction on Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. until Midnight and continuing on Saturday, August 14th from 6:00 p.m. until Midnight.
