“ENTERTAINMENT LEGENDS” RARE AND PERSONAL COLLECTIBLES OFFERED AT RM’S MONTEREY AND SPORTS CAR AUCTION

Hundreds of Historic Artifacts – From Hugh Hefner’s Robe, Pipe and Slippers to the Beatles’ First Grammy Are Featured in Special Memorabilia Auction, August 13-14, 2004

LOS ANGELES, California (August 1, 2004) – RM Auctions, in conjunction with Julien Entertainment Company, will host an extraordinary two-day “Entertainment Legends” memorabilia sale as part of its annual Monterey Sports and Classic car Auction August 13-14. The live and online auction (accessible on eBay at www.ebay.com) contains hundreds of personal artifacts and memorabilia from Hollywood stars, music industry legends, and international celebrities, including Playboy founder Hugh Hefner.

“With the help of Julien Entertainment, we have been able to amass an astounding array of collectibles, the likes of which are rarely, if ever, available for sale,” says RM founder Rob Myers. “From personal letters and vintage movie costumes, to actual Grammy and Golden Globe Awards, this auction features one-of-a-kind items that serious collectors won’t want to miss.”

The event opens of Friday, August 13th with a number of items from the personal collection of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner. The offerings include his robe, pipe and slippers, an invitation to attend a Playboy Mansion party, a vintage Playboy Bunny costume, plus Playboy Magazine layouts and original artwork and jewelry.

Topping the Entertainment Legends auction lots to be sold on Saturday, August 14th are:
  • Beatles’ Grammy for A Hard Day’s Night – The first Grammy ever presented to the Beatles, it was awarded in 1964 and inscribed “Best Performance by a Vocal Group” for the now-legendary A Hard Day’s Night recording (Est: 60,000 to $80,000)
  • The Eagles’ Grammy for Hotel California – Awarded in 1977 for The Eagles’ explosive hit "Hotel California", which anchored the band’s album of the same name, today ranked as one of the 10 best-selling Rock albums of all time (Est: $30,000 to $50,000)
  • George Harrison autograph letter – sent by Harrison to his friend and former Rebel band mate Arthur Kelly in Liverpool during the Beatles Hamburg, Germany tour. Complete with original envelope, the 3-page handwritten letter makes the first mention of soon-to-be band member Ringo Starr. (Est: $15,000 to $20,000)
  • Original Superman Costume – worn by actor Christopher Reeve in two Superman films (1978 and 1980) it is comprised of a sky blue tunic with the “S” logo, matching leggings and a red cape with handwritten notations in black ink (Christopher Reeve walking cape, Sept. 14-9-79 and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity (Est: $10,000 to $20,000)
  • Golden Globe Award for Ben Hur – the original Foreign Press Association award inscribed “Ben Hur – Best Picture, Drama,” and presented to the blockbuster 1959 MGM movie starring Charleton Heston (Est: $7,000 to $9,000)
  • Austin Powers’ Goldmember Suit – worn by actor Mike Myers, it consists of a blue polka dot shirt, blue and red striped suit jacket (labeled Mike Myers), blue and red striped pants plus a red/white striped scarf and white belt (Est: $5,000 to $7,000)
  • Michael Jackson’s Thriller Jacket – the sequin-covered, long-sleeved custom black jacket with thin lapels that Michael wore on his “Thriller” Tour. The jacket comes with a black and white image of Jackson wearing the sequined beauty (Est: $6,000 to $8,000)
  • Fender and Rickenbacher Guitars used to record the Friends theme song – two separate lots, each containing a guitar owned by The Rembrandts’ Phil Solem and used to record the "I’ll Be There For You" theme song from the mega-hit NBC sitcom Friends and the Friends video (Est: $4,000 to $6,000 for the custom Fender Telecoustic and $7,000 to $9,000 for the red sunburst Rickenbacher 12-string)

    Following each day’s Memorabilia Auction, RM Auctions will host the 19th annual Monterey Sports and Classic Car Auction, featuring a selection of million dollar cars including a rare 1953 Ferrari 166/250 MM Competition Spyder. This stunning Ferrari, with one-off coachwork by Carlo Abarth, has been impeccably restored to accentuate its imposing central headlight, twin nose scoops and scalloped fender wells. Another car expected to top the million dollar mark is a 1961 Chaparral 1 Sports Racing Car, created by Texan racing driver Jim Hall. This first edition Chaparral 1 is one of only five such Chaparrals ever constructed.

    In addition, RM will feature the most significant offering of Shelby cars at public auction in recent history. Ten unparalleled Shelby Mustangs and Cobras including the first 2004 Shelby-AC Cars FIA Cobra produced since 1967 will be sold at No Reserve, with legendary builder Carroll Shelby on hand to watch the action.

    RM Auction’s Monterey Sports and Classic Car Auction will be held at the Portola Plaza Hotel (formerly the Doubletree Hotel) at Fisherman’s Wharf, 2 Portola Place, Monterey, California. The Playboy auction begins at 4:00 p.m. Friday, August 13, followed at 6:00 p.m. with the first automotive lots. Action continues Saturday, August 14 at 11:00 am with the Entertainment Legends memorabilia auction, with the automotive auction at 6:00 p.m. Vehicles and memorabilia can be previewed beginning August 12th from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.

    Admission is $30 per person (good for Thursday through Saturday) with children 12 and under admitted free of charge. An auction catalog only is available for $50 U.S. plus $10 shipping and handling within North America, by calling 800-211-4371.
