Vintage Motor Cars at Amelia Island

Competition Ferrari Daytona, Ferrari 166 MM and Pebble Beach-winning Duesenberg Each Reach Million Dollar Plus Mark While Baryshnikov Buick Raises $58,000 for Charity

BLENHEIM, Ontario, Canada (March, 15, 2005) – RM Auctions’ Vintage Motor Cars at Amelia Island wrapped up another record-breaking day, posting sales of $13.7 million and a sell-through rate of nearly 95 percent during the single-day event at the elegant Ritz-Carlton Hotel on the Florida coast. The prestigious sale, hosted in conjunction with the legendary Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance weekend, consisted of 102 important collector vehicles spanning more than 80 years of elegant and innovative automotive design, included a trio of amazing autos that each exceeded the million dollar mark.

1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Competizione - The auction’s top seller was hammered down at $1,980,000 including buyer’s premium. This ex- North American Racing Team (N.A.R.T.) car is one of only 15 Competition Daytonas and the last of the five desirable First Series versions constructed by the Ferrari factory. Its racing history includes all of the major venues of its day, including Daytona, Sebring, Montlhery, Watkins Glen and LeMans, and its driver lineup reads like a Who’s Who of sports car racing, including Luigi Chinetti, Ronny Bucknam, Sam Posey, David Hobbs, and Formula One stars J.P. Jarrier and Jacques Lafitte.

1950 Ferrari 166 MM Touring Barchetta - Another rare Ferrari sold for $1,760,000. One of just 26 Touring Barchettas built between 1948 and 1950, this car also boasts a remarkable racing history, including three consecutive top 10 finishes at the 12 Hours of Sebring. Adding to its provenance, this 166 MM was recently named “Most Outstanding Competition Car by the Ferrari Club of America.

1933 Duesenberg Model SJ Riviera Phaeton – This pre-war classic was hammered sold for $1,320,000 including buyer’s premium. One of only three ever built and the only one created with a factory supercharger, this stunning example sporting Brunn coachwork was recently restored by Fran Roxas and captured the “Most Elegant” trophy at the 2003 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

“We knew our auction lineup was unmatched in quality and contained cars with a huge desirability factor, and the final bids supported our belief,” says Rob Myers of RM Auctions. “The Amelia Island Concours weekend, like its summer equivalent at Pebble Beach, attracts serious collectors from around the world; collectors who are looking for the very finest automotive examples to add to their holdings or purchase for investment. Final hammer prices this weekend proved that collectors are quite willing to pay top dollar to acquire the very best.”

A total of 27 vehicles topped the $100,000 threshold, as aggressive bidders collected everything from classic Rolls-Royces, Packards, and Bentleys, to a 1992 Jaguar XJ220 supercar. A very rare 1913 Cretors Popcorn Wagon sold for $166,100.

The auction excitement continued as a one-of-a-kind 1920 Paige 6-66 Daytona Speedster was driven onto the auction stage by three-time Indy 500 champ Bobby Unser - winning a final bid of $198,000 and cheers from the audience.

The event’s highlight was an appearance on the block by legendary Russian dancer and actor Mikhail Baryshnikov who offered his personal 1957 Buick Super Riviera Two-Door Hardtop for auction to benefit his charities. His car sold for a respectable $58,000 with all proceeds being donated to the Gilman International Conservation and White Oak Conservation Center and the Baryshnikov Dance Foundation. www.giconline.org
