Vintage Motor Cars at Meadow Brook Hall

1930 Model SJ Torpedo Phaeton and 1930 Model J Convertible Coupe Set New Standards for the Prestigious Luxury Marque at Vintage Motor Cars at Meadow Brook Auction – August 6, 2005

BLENHEIM, Ontario, Canada (April 29, 2005) – Expected to be one of RM Auctions’ most electrifying auctions of the year, the annual Vintage Motor Cars at Meadow Brook Classic Car Auction opens with two of the most dramatic and dynamic luxury cars ever built. This year’s event, scheduled for Saturday, August 6, 2005 on the picturesque campus of Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, in conjunction with the world-renowned Meadow Brook Concours d’Elegance, features two exceptional 1930 Duesenbergs – each with a fully documented and interesting provenance.

1930 Duesenberg Model SJ Torpedo Phaeton - RM Auctions is delighted to offer this impressive factory supercharged Duesenberg with coachwork by Walker La Grande, and a previous winner of the “Best of Show” award at the 1987 Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Festival. Originally delivered to a buyer in Wisconsin, it was eventually acquired by noted collector and enthusiast Mr. Robert Bahre in 1984. Bahre executed a comprehensive restoration of the car prior to its award-winning appearance. While in its current owner’s care, the SJ has been meticulously maintained and cared for. Accordingly, it is considered one of the most attractive and desirable SJ Duesenbergs in existence. (Estimate available on request.)

1930 Duesenberg Model J Convertible Coupe - A second million dollar “Duesy” headlining the annual Meadow Brook sale is a Murphy-bodied Convertible Coupe that was originally sold by Duesenberg’s New York City factory branch in August 1929 and delivered to William Durant Campbell. Its provenance can be traced through five additional owners, concluding with noted Duesenberg historian Ray Wolff, who conducted its intricate sympathetic restoration, contributing to the car’s current lovely overall condition. (Estimate: $850,000 - $1,000,000)

“With such important cars, whether they’re purchased for enjoyment or investment, it’s imperative for potential buyers to be able to document the provenance of the vehicle,” says Rob Myers of RM Auctions. “In the case of these two examples, each has an authenticated lineage and restoration information that only add to their intrinsic value.”

Other significant vehicles consigned for RM’s Vintage Motor Cars at Meadow Brook sale include:

1932 Cadillac V8 Dual Cowl Phaeton – This example is likely one of the most original Cadillac Dual Cowl Phaetons in existence. Featuring a 353 cu. in. V8 engine and many innovative features for its time, it remains in absolutely timewarp stunning original condition. (Estimate: $175,000 – $225,000)

1932 LaSalle Coupe & 1934 LaSalle Convertible Coupe – A stunning pair from Cadillac’s sister company LaSalle designed and styled by the legendary Harley Earl. The 1932 LaSalle is a handsome three-window coupe and is documented as having been built for the 1933 Chicago World's Fair. It displays a fresh and complete restoration in its original India Green colors and Straw Yellow wire wheels). The 1934 example is a very rare, factory right-hand drive model that was a featured car from the Richard P. Kughn Carail Museum Collection. This example is a splendid representation of art deco styling and one of America’s finest marques.
