Vintage Motor Cars in Arizona

James Bond's 1965 Aston Martin DB5, Al Capone’s Bullet Proof Cadillac, Hank Williams Jr.’s Silver Dollar Pontiac and $3.2 Million Packard Set Single Day Record at Phoenix Arizona Event

PHOENIX, Arizona (January 24, 2006) - RM Auctions, North America's leading collector car auction house, drew worldwide attention to Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa in Phoenix with the record sale of three extraordinary "celebrity" automobiles. Headlining the marquee at the 7th Annual Vintage Motor Cars in Arizona sale was the "James Bond" 1965 Aston Martin DB5, widely considered the most famous car in the world, which sold for $2.1 Million.

The lights darkened as the Aston Martin entered the auction hall with machine guns blasting, creating an electrifying aura among the capacity crowd. The bidding was intense as the contenders continued to raise the gavel price by exciting $50,000 increments, with the audience hanging on every bid. When the hammer finally fell closing the sale, the winning price was announced at $2.1 Million and a roar went up from the crowd.

"We have been overwhelmed by the amount of worldwide attention for the James Bond Aston Martin," said RM Auctions co-founder Rob Myers. "It was literally standing room only in the auction hall and you could feel the electricity in the air! The winning bidder now owns the most famous car in the world."

Also crossing the block was infamous gangster Al Capone's 1928 Cadillac Town Car that sold for $621,500 and country music star Hank Williams Jr.'s 1964 "Silver Dollar" Pontiac Convertible that hammered down for $214,500.

Nine cars in total sold for $1 Million or more, highlighted by the auction's top seller, a $3.2 Million 1934 Packard Twelve Runabout Speedster.

James Bond's 1965 Aston Martin DB5 - $2,100,000 The internationally famous 1965 Aston Martin DB5 was the unofficial star of James Bond movies "Thunderball" and "Goldfinger". The car had not been offered for sale for 35 years making the auction and is one of only three examples that exist in the world today, creating a rare opportunity to acquire what is widely considered to be the most famous car of all time. The famed Aston Martin is complete with numerous exciting spy gadgets including: front-firing machine guns, rotating license plates, wheel-mounted tire slasher and retractable rear bullet-proof shield - designed by Oscar wiunning SPX master John Stears.

Al Capone's 1928 Cadillac Town Sedan, Model 501, Series 341 A - $621,500 One of the most historically significant pre-war American built cars of its time, the Cadillac was used for Capone's personal transportation around his Illinois empire. The car was painted in the same colors as the Chicago police cars of the era to allow Capone's associates to thwart pursuers by any means necessary. It is even said to have been used by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt after it was confiscated by the U.S. Treasury Department in 1932 because of the advanced security installations.

Hank Williams Jr.'s 1964 Pontiac Bonneville Convertible - $214,500 The epitome of country music's motoring history, this wild Pontiac, also known as "The Silver Dollar Pontiac" is adorned with hundreds of authentic silver dollars, silver horseshoes, pistols, rifles and silver horse heads. The Pontiac's entire interior including seats, seat belts, doors, carpeting and even gas and brake pedals is crafted of hand-tooled leather by the legendary "rodeo tailor to the stars," Nudie Cohn. This incredible vehicle accompanied Williams on tours of the U.S. and Canada, appeared on the Tonight Show, and featured prominently in the promotion of the movie Your Cheatin' Heart, starring George Hamilton.

RM Auctions sold 108 of the 112 cars offered for bid (a 96% sales rate) and total automobiles sales of $31,335,100 were announced, a record for a one-day auction.
