BABE RUTH’S 1940 LINCOLN ANCHORS RM AUCTIONS’ DINGMAN COLLECTION SALE

The Dingman Ford Collection

Impeccably Restored 1940 Zephyr Continental Cabriolet Owned by Baseball Legend Babe Ruth Up For Bids – June 9-11, 2006 Kensington, NH

BLENHEIM, Ontario, Canada (April 12, 2006) – Collectors can really hit one out of the ballpark with a special vehicle offered by RM Auctions at its Dingman Ford Collection sale on June 9-11, 2006 in Kensington, New Hampshire. A cornerstone of the auction is a beautifully restored 1940 Lincoln Zephyr Continental Cabriolet formerly the property of George Herman “Babe” Ruth, one of Major League Baseball’s greatest legends. As a bonus, the top bidder will also receive a replica of Ruth’s 1927 Yankees’ team jacket and one of the Bambino’s formidable bats, which helped mold the storied history of Yankee Stadium – The House That Ruth Built.

“With its long history attributing Babe Ruth ownership, a touch of mystery and its concours-ready condition, this Lincoln is one of the most important and desirable of all of the hand-built 1940 Zephyr Continentals in the world,” says Mike Fairbairn of RM Auctions. “Since this magnificent Continental has never been shown or judged, it is eligible for a full sweep of Classic Car Club of America events, where it will be an avidly sought as a participant.”

The car was presented to Ruth in 1940 by Yankees’ president Joe McCarthy, with whom The Babe had a rather contentious relationship during his years in New York. During WWII, the car surfaced in Canada, owned by a New York sportswriter, who claimed Ruth had received several cars as gifts and had given the Continental to him – not surprising in view of the famous slugger’s acknowledged dislike of his manager.

Subsequent owners in Canada carefully preserved The Babe’s Continental, and it was displayed for several years in the Cars of the Stars Museum in Niagara Falls and at the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. The car was acquired by the Dingman Collection in 2001 and underwent a complete nut-and-bolt restoration.

Today, restored to showroom condition, it is presented in a rich, lustrous black finish that is believed to be its original color. Inside it sports a striking maroon leather interior, and its black cloth cabriolet top, piped in maroon, matches the car’s interior appointments. All of the interior brightwork, including door handles, instrument bezels, panel bezels, and window winder as well as its exterior door handles, are gold-plated.

This car is one of many important vehicles that represent the lifelong collecting passion of Michael Dingman, who served as a Ford Motor Company director for 21 years. Dingman, also an experienced race driver, personally competed in Fords, driving Roush-prepared Mustangs in the SCCA’s Trans-Am Series in the early 1990s.

The Dingman Collection Fords are exactly what collectors seek – high-point cars, many purchased right off the championship field, or restored by Dingman’s personal specialists, each representing quality of the highest standard. Nearly every year and every open or sporting body style of the venerable flat-head Fords are represented, including what must be one of the world’s finest and most extensive collections of Ford woodie wagons.

The three-day sale will take place at the Dingman Estate, in the picturesque town of Kensington, New Hampshire. In addition to the expansive building that houses his collections, Dingman’s estate has a full scale replica of a prewar Shell station, and an authentic and fully operational 1940s diner.

A comprehensive 2-volume boxed collector catalog is available and provides detailed information on the lots offered to interested bidders. Catalogs may be ordered online at www.rmauctions.com, or by calling (800) 211-4371 and are good for two admissions to the sale.
