  • One of only 1,268 Giulietta Berlina TI variants manufactured in 1957
  • Formerly owned by Renault F1 Sporting Director and noted Ferrari collector Jean Sage
  • Extensive work carried out by marque and race preparation specialists Autofficine Omega
  • Highly eligible; ideal entry to numerous vintage racing events

With more than 177,000 units manufactured between 1954 and 1965, the Giulietta family arguably saved Alfa Romeo during Italy’s painful post-war recovery. All Giulietta models were underpinned by the potent all-aluminium 1,300-cc twin-cam engine and rear-wheel drive. Launched in 1957, the Berlina TI offered an increased compression ratio and a twin-choke downdraught carburettor offering an additional 12 bhp. Indeed, with a maximum speed of 96 mph, the car’s conservative ‘three-box’ looks belied its performance.

This particular car left the Portello works in late 1957, the first year of Berlina TI production in which fewer examples were constructed than in any other. Although no period competition history has been identified, it was evidently prepared for historic racing in the 1990s, with recorded outings at Vallelunga, Zandvoort and Donington Park.

After passing into the ownership of noted Swiss Alfa authority Conrad Waser in 2000, the car was sold to eminent collector and former Renault F1 Sporting Director Jean Sage in 2004. With him, the car benefited from more than €15.000 worth of expenditure with marque specialists Autofficina Omega, which included engine and gearbox rebuilds.

Accompanied by older-style FIA and FFSA papers, this eminently usable Portello classic would be an ideal (and economical) entry to the ever-popular St Mary’s Trophy race at the Goodwood Revival – in which a similar Berlina TI finished second in 2017 – or for any number of the Tours for which it is eligible.

Further to the catalogue description, this Giulietta TI competed in the Tour Auto and Tour de España in 2004, where it finished 1st and 2nd in class, respectively.
